About Green Cities Coalition
Launched in 2008, the Green Cities Coalition is a grass-roots organization aimed at creating partnerships and encouraging collaboration among the people and organizations working for sustainability in the Pikes Peak Region. We are a true coalition with 99 percent of our projects being accomplished by our organization, business, and individual members. The GCC focuses on educating people, organizing partnerships and enhancing communications around all things sustainable.
To date, all of our funding has come from membership dues and donations.
At Green City Summit II in 2008, we launched this website to feature a comprehensive calendar of environmental and sustainability events and began monthly e-newsletters about significant developments in the region. We launched working groups around five priority areas: energy, local food, recycling, transportation, and water. After helping develop the Pikes Peak Regional Sustainability Plan, we adopted many of the goals for implementation. Developments in all these areas are shared monthly at our Steering Committee meetings and Green Works networking mixers.
When stakeholders and interested parties gather around the table to collaborate, wonderful things happen. Our working groups have been involved in encouraging single-stream recycling, promoting wind power at Colorado Springs Utilities, organizing Local Food Week and opposing fracking.
